Granite Dells is Prescott's iconic country, mounds and domes of ancient granite piled up around Watson and Willow Lakes on the north edge of town. Building among the Dells means some of the most beautiful and most stubborn ground in the region, where the rock is the whole point and also the whole challenge.
This is granite in its most exposed form, massive boulders and solid rock shelves under a thin cover of decomposed granite, with slope and outcrop on nearly every lot. There is little soil to work with, so a pad or a trench is often a matter of moving or breaking rock rather than digging dirt. Runoff sheets straight off the granite in monsoon season and has to be caught before it reaches the structure.
